School Leaver Resources and Articles on the Web

Notes from video talk

We’ve looked through the different resources and articles on the web to help churches think about their year 13 students moving out of school.

Resources

Youth Train

  • Prepare: A three part series for those planning on leaving home to work or study

Presbytality

Presbytality is about connecting young people on the move with churches they can relate to in their new home. But mostly, it’s just about offering good old fashioned hospitality, linking young people up with a youth worker who will take them out for a coffee, give them a present, and be someone they can catch up with in a new city.

Connect Online – Successfully transitioning into and out of youth group

7:00pm – 8:30pm Monday 13 Sept 2021: – via Zoom, from anywhere in the country.

The stats don’t lie, many of our young people exit our churches when they move from children’s ministry into youth group and when they finish. These transition periods marked to moving into college and going to university are tricky for young people, parents and churches to navigate.

In this super practical session the PYM team will share and explore helpful strategies for supporting young people, their parents and leaders at these important transition stages. We will also make sure you get the opportunity to learn from each other in our breakout group discussions.

Young Adult Ministry Essentials – Online Training

It’s no surprise to any of us when we hear the data saying there are less and less young adults in our churches. Many of us in ministry are experiencing this first hand. Whilst there is no silver bullet to change this situation, understanding the way young adults think about faith and life and how that might differ to other generations is a key starting point if the church wants to connect with and be relevant to the young adults in our community.

We have invited Paul Humphreys to come and share with us and lead us in a conversation around engaging with young adults. Paul has had years of experience working with and journeying alongside young adults as a youth pastor and in camping ministry, both in New Zealand and overseas. Alongside Paul’s hands on experience, he has also read widely and thought deeply about the church’s engagement with its younger members. Currently Paul serves as the National Leadership Facilitator for Scripture Union New Zealand.

The Justice Conference – 22 May 2021

It can be difficult to know how to start making a difference in a world filled with inequalities and uncertainties.

We often see how broken relationships and injustice can keep people trapped in poverty. But God’s at work amid the world’s chaos, and we can partner with him in transforming and restoring relationships, communities and the world.

That’s why Tearfund are excited to invite you to The Justice Conference 2021! A global gathering of Christians who are passionate about living out the message of Jesus and making justice a way of life!

Since 2016, Tearfund has been hosting The Justice Conference in New Zealand. This year, the conference will be online, broadcast on 22 May 2021 from 11 countries over 24 hours.

You’ll be hearing from top notch speakers around the world whilst also having the opportunity to join with thousands of Christians as we pray, worship, discuss and take action together.

Tearfund have an inspiring line-up of speakers including Danielle Strickland, Krish Kandiah, Lisa Sharon Harper and many more, tackling topics such as racism, poverty and climate change from a biblical perspective.

The conference starts at 6pm New Zealand time, but don’t worry we’re not expecting you to watch at 2am in the morning! The sessions will be available to stream On Demand, so why not host a watch party with your friends, family or church group on a day and time that suits you?

Tearfund invites you to join us as we dig deep into God’s word and get equipped to follow his call to ‘do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with our God’ (Micah 6:8).

Blessings,
The Justice Conference Team

Applications invited for CCA’s Human Rights Training Programme

The Institute on Human Rights (IHR) is a new initiative of the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) to train prospective human rights and social activists from among young Christians in Asia.

Spanning over a period of two weeks from 17 to 28 May 2021, the intensive training course is designed to enable young people to understand the principles of human rights and human dignity from Christian theological perspectives as well as to help them to understand the international human rights instruments and protection mechanisms.

The theme of IHR–2021 is “Being Defenders of Human Rights and Human Dignity”.

The IHR will be conducted virtually.

The resource persons will include a wide range of internationally acclaimed human rights defenders practitioners, academics, and legal luminaries specialising in international human rights law and human rights protection mechanisms, including experts in human rights advocacy at the UN.

The syllabus for the course will cover the principles and foundations of human rights, human rights from biblical theological perspectives, human rights from interfaith perspectives, international human rights instruments and human rights protection mechanisms, human rights advocacy at the UN, and specific human rights issues in the Asian context.

The IHR will help prospective human rights defenders to develop their skills on the practical application of theoretical and legal human rights instruments while being engaged in defending human rights in their respective contexts.

Admissions to IHR–2021 will be limited to 25 participants between the ages of 25 and 35. Participants will be selected from among applicants who have an interest and commitment to human rights advocacy and ability to communicate in English.

The deadline for receiving completed applications for IHR–2021 is 10 April 2021.

If you are interested in applying in this opportunity please contact Gordon Fitch by the 31 March 2021. (gordon@presbyterian.org.nz)
