New Zealand’s housing crisis is having a devastating impact on our most vulnerable families and individuals. With housing and living costs now at all time highs, one in 120 Kiwis are now classed as housing deprived.
It’s common to think of rough sleepers when we consider homelessness, but it’s a much wider problem that needs to be addressed. ‘Homelessness’ includes those living in unsafe and unsuitable locations such as on the streets, in garages, tents, caravans, cars, couch surfing or living in shared housing with other families. Those sleeping rough represent only 20% of those without homes.
Every day in New Zealand, agencies work together to help homeless individuals and families to access food, emergency accommodation, clothing, furnishings, counselling and other welfare support to help address their financial, health, security and social needs.
Together we could do so much more.
